How do we turn carbon emissions into value while reducing emissions?

A global fleet of fossil fueled ships moves 85% of global goods, and watercraft of all sizes move people and goods every day. This is unlikely to change, meaning the watercraft industry has an ongoing challenge and a lengthy transition. Thus the focus of our industry partners is on reducing the carbon footprint of their ships and boats during operation.

To accomplish this, one has to look at opportunities across the entire spectrum of shipping operations. This has led our Waste To Value team to think of a variety of questions:

  • Can we ship goods efficiently and profitably by water without fossil fuels?

  • Can we decarbonize how ships move?

  • Can we change the fuel sources?

  • Can new propulsion systems use less energy and produce less waste?

  • While we are transitioning to the future, what is required to reduce the impact of how existing ships move without compromising on speed and costs?

  • How far away are we from partial or full autonomous operation?
